Liang Kee Farming: Malaysia’s Pioneer in Humane, Sustainable & Future-Ready Egg Production
In November 2025, Big Dutchman’s Head of Communications, Mr Holger Karkheck, together with Area Sales Manager, Mr Mo Chin Tiong, visited Liang Kee Farming in Kampar, Perak, to document the story behind one of Malaysia’s most progressive and admired poultry farms. Their visit captured the farm’s remarkable evolution – a rare blend of family heritage, modern innovation, and a genuine commitment to animal welfare.
Founded in 1977, Liang Kee Farming began as a modest family business, where eggs were graded manually and production was limited. Today, under the leadership of Managing Director, Mr Tan Leng Yee, the farm produces over 500,000 eggs per day, supported by upgraded egg grading and egg processing systems that ensure better product consistency, hygiene, and shelf life. A third-generation farmer, Mr Tan grew up working on the farm from childhood. His deep agricultural roots, combined with an openness to innovation and global best practices, have shaped Liang Kee’s transformation into a modern operation with a strong reputation for quality, sustainability, and humane farming.

Long before consumer demand shifted, Mr Tan had already begun experimenting with cage-free and free-range systems. What started with 1,000 birds has grown into 30,000 hens raised in environments designed for movement, comfort, and natural behaviours. Today, Liang Kee operates across 45 acres dedicated to humane egg production, making it the only farm of its kind in Malaysia at this scale. Each barn is designed with ample indoor space and a dedicated outdoor area for foraging, scratching, dust bathing, and roaming. Birds have both structured housing and open-range access, balanced with climate-comfort considerations suited to Malaysia’s tropical conditions. By 2026, the farm will expand to house around 100,000 free-range hens, enabling total farm production to reach approximately 600,000 eggs per day.
A major milestone in this growth is the new facility being developed about one kilometre from the current farm. This site is being built with a fully enclosed steel structure and advanced insulation features to provide optimal temperature stability and energy efficiency. At the heart of this expansion lies Big Dutchman’s Natura Step, a multi-tier aviary system designed to encourage natural behaviours, promote flock uniformity, support efficient production, ensure bird comfort, and improve overall operational effectiveness. When completed, the new site will eventually operate four houses of 20,000 hens each, creating a modern environment that elevates both animal welfare and production efficiency.

Nutrition is another area where Liang Kee has pushed ahead. A standout feature of the farm’s sustainability model is its use of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) as part of the hens’ diet. Initially sourced externally, Mr Tan later established his own BSFL production facility on the farm after observing significant improvements in yolk colour, shell strength, bird health, digestion, natural foraging behaviour, immune resilience, and feed cost stability. The larvae are raised using plant-based agricultural by-products, making the system both ethical and environmentally friendly. Around 80% of the larvae are roasted and incorporated into the feed, while the remaining 20% are offered fresh as enrichment snacks, encouraging hens to express their natural foraging instincts.

Liang Kee Farming is not just a poultry operation; it is a thriving agricultural ecosystem. During their visit, Mr Holger and Mr Mo documented a wide range of on-farm activities and produce, including freshwater fish ponds, fruit orchards with jackfruit, rambutan, durian and other crops, vegetable cultivation under the Honest Greens brand, stingless bee (madu kelulut) honey production, goats, and even a pair of alpacas kept for fibre and as gentle herd animals. The farm also runs a charming café called “1000 Telur”, where visitors can enjoy fresh farm-to-table dishes and learn more about sustainable egg farming. This holistic approach reinforces Mr Tan’s belief that when you treat the animals and the land well, they will reward you in return.
To support growth and maintain high quality standards, Liang Kee has invested heavily in improved egg handling, including upgraded grading, better detection of breakage and defects, and stronger processing and hygiene workflows. These measures help to ensure better product safety, longer shelf life, and consistently high quality — all essential for meeting the expectations of increasingly health-conscious and discerning consumers. Liang Kee’s eggs are widely distributed through major retailers such as Lotus’s, Isetan, Jaya Grocer and Village Grocer, including its premium free-range line.

As Malaysia moves toward more ethical and sustainable food systems, Liang Kee Farming stands at the forefront of this shift. The farm’s philosophy places strong emphasis on humane farming, sustainability, low chemical and antibiotic usage, high nutritional integrity, transparency, education, and continuous innovation. The upcoming Natura Step facility represents the next chapter in Liang Kee’s commitment to responsible poultry farming and higher welfare standards.

The collaboration between Liang Kee Farming and Big Dutchman continues to grow as both organisations work towards future-ready poultry solutions. Big Dutchman Asia is proud to support Mr Tan’s vision, from infrastructure development and system design to long-term farm planning. Liang Kee’s journey is an inspiring example of how tradition, innovation, and compassion can come together to build a better future for Malaysian agriculture.
